Bye, Felicia!

Like most of you, December is when I take stock and get inspired for the coming year.

This time, I want to do a remix: Gregorian timing with a Lunar New Year practice.

A notable part of Gregorian December is getting gifts. As for Lunar New Year, a common practice is to tidy up right before; cleaning is a symbol of sweeping out any misfortune or bad luck. One practice is to “take in” while the other is to “take out.”

So this time around, I want to do a cleaning of the mind as a gift to myself. What have I picked up this year that I want to let go of?

  • Qualifying things as binary when I react. Oh, how quickly I say “that’s so good!” or “hey, guys” when other options are available, such as “that’s the one!” or “hey, everyone.”

  • Listening to voice notes or videos at 2x speed. I notice it feeds my impatience and a belief that I take too long to say what’s on my mind because it sounds like everyone else is talking faster.

  • Subtly controlling others’ emotions. It sucks to see someone you deeply care for get hurt or overwhelmed. I’m starting to see that it’s just as meaningful when I sit quietly with them rather than offer solutions.

  • Judgmental self-statements. This has been a multi-year effort but nowadays it sounds like “that sucks” or “wow, I should have known better.” This still seeps into my subconscious and eat away at my confidence when I made the best decisions I could with the information I had.

These may sound small but keep in mind that what you water is what grows in your garden — and that includes the weeds. 🌱

It’s time to make more space for the good stuff in life. Bye, Felicia!
