Connect Over Fear

These are scary times, and that tends to bring out our deepest fears.

I’m not talking about snakes or ghosts but the fear of what might be true about ourselves: the fear of not being enough, of being wrong, and so on.

These fears are universal. As humans, we all share them.

Then why is it so hard to connect with others?

Sometimes two people with the same fear may appear completely different because of the strategies they choose to deal with that fear.

Take the fear of being wrong:

  • One person can choose to speak loud, fast, and with certainty. Others have no choice but to hear them or think they must be right.

  • Another person can choose to listen, let others talk first, or speak in generalities. That way they never say anything that will give others an opportunity to disagree.

These are strategies that keep people apart and leave both sides feeling unheard or misunderstood. It also perpetuates the fear that had us behaving this way to begin with.

What if we shared our fears instead of hiding them? What would be possible then?

These same two people could end up realizing they have more in common, put down their defenses, and start a genuine connection. Who knows what they will create from there?

If you find yourself curious about how these dynamics show up in your life, speaking with a life coach can help you get acquainted with where your fears are stopping you. You may find it easier to access your inner courage to connect with others.
